The quest for the perfect button

I have terrible trouble finding buttons I like. It’s frustrating to put lots of thought and effort into knitting or sewing a garment, only to be thwarted at the last stage of finishing.

The selection available at our local fabric stores is really hit and miss so I’ve decided to declare this year of online button shopping (and online craft shopping more generally).

My first foray into this exciting new world is a small order from Deramores in the UK. It arrived relatively quickly, and I must say I’m rather pleased.

IMG_1280I’ve been searching for the perfect 7/8″ wooden button for a baby boy cardigan I finished knitting months ago. I’ve looked high and low and haven’t been able to find anything suitable locally, or from local online stores. You’d think it would be easy enough to find attractive, round, wooden buttons, no? Wrong.

I think the buttons on the far left should be a perfect fit. This makes me very happy.

The only problem with my online button shopping plans is delivery times. I’m terrible at waiting for the post. I think I’m going to have to save up some spending money, do a pre-emptive button order and build up my button stash.

Every self-respecting crafter needs a button stash, right? Any suggestions for online button stores?

  1. I have the same problem with finding buttons. I often find myself feeling a tad envious of others abilities to find the perfect buttons for their projects. šŸ™‚

I love Deramores and buy quite a few patterns and yarn from there as it is nearly half price from what I would pay in my LYS. The buttons look great. I always have trouble trying to find nice ones.

I buy every button I like at second hand shops. I was so lucky one time, my boyfriend found an entire tin just full of lovely lovely buttons, it must have been someone’s old collection! Keep an eye out, they are like little treasures (but of course, no matter how large your button collection, you need more.. more… more..)

My sister and most of my friends search Etsy.com for their buttons. They have 438,351 items listed under a search of buttons – which include vintage and homemade buttons. It might be fun to just do a browse and see what they have.

I’m the same! endless searching for perfect buttons!
