A gift from Grandma

Hugo received his first piece of mail this week – in the form of a present from Grandma and Grandpa. My lovely mother had not only scoured the shops for some cute boys clothes (looks like almost everyone is taking our new male family member as a perfect excuse to shop), but also knitted Hugo the cutest Beyond Puerperium cardigan.

IMG_1156The cardigan is made from a cotton yarn which I hope will keep our little boy cool in this hot weather. The mother of pearl buttons are cute and set off the yarn perfectly.

IMG_1181 Mum started the cardigan while Hugo was still in utero and worked on it while we waited for him to be born. It was a tricky project: the weather was hot, the yarn was a bit slippery and poor Mum had a very keen helper (Elena). It was also Mum’s first foray into the world of top-down, seamless, circular needle-based construction. She did a great job.

Mum and I have been holding our collective breaths about this cardigan. Mum knitted the 0-3 month size and we’ve been worried it might be too small for him – but neither of us had breathed a word of our worries to the other!

The other day, after casting aside another of Elena’s too-small hand-me-downs, I rang Mum and told her I thought she had better pop the cardigan in the mail quick smart lest little Hugo grew too big too quickly.

We needn’t have worried. It fits perfectly!
